"Moana" is a 2016 Disney animated film directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. The film is set in ancient Polynesia and follows the story of a young girl named Moana who is chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti, a goddess who created all life in the Pacific Islands.

### **Plot Summary**

#### **Introduction**

Moana Waialiki is a spirited and adventurous teenager who lives on the island of Motunui. Her father, Chief Tui, is the leader of the island and is determined to keep Moana safe and within the confines of their island, which has become isolated from the rest of the world. Moana’s grandmother, Tala, encourages her to explore the ocean and embrace her destiny, but Chief Tui is resistant to the idea.

#### **The Heart of Te Fiti**

Long ago, the heart of Te Fiti, a powerful green stone, was stolen by the demigod Maui, who was seeking to gain more power. This act led to environmental decay and darkness spreading across the ocean. Moana discovers that the island's crops are failing and the fish are scarce, a sign that the heart must be restored.

#### **Moana's Journey**

Guided by her grandmother’s spirit, Moana sets sail across the ocean to find Maui and convince him to help her restore the heart of Te Fiti. She finds Maui on a distant island, and although he is initially reluctant and self-centered, he agrees to help her after a series of misadventures.

#### **Challenges and Growth**

Moana and Maui face numerous challenges together, including battling coconut pirates and navigating through dangerous waters. Along the way, Maui learns to trust Moana and becomes more selfless. Moana discovers her true identity and realizes that she is the chosen one to restore the heart of Te Fiti.

#### **Climactic Battle**

The climax of the film takes place at the island of Te Fiti, where Moana and Maui face the lava monster, Te Ka, who has been corrupted by the absence of the heart. Moana uses her knowledge and understanding of the ocean to calm and restore Te Ka, revealing that Te Ka is actually Te Fiti in a corrupted form.

#### **Resolution**

With the heart of Te Fiti restored, the island and the ocean are rejuvenated. Moana returns to Motunui, where she is celebrated as a hero. She takes her place as a leader of her people, guiding them back to their voyaging ways and embracing their connection to the ocean.

The film concludes with Moana’s community thriving and exploring the seas once more, with Moana fully embracing her role as a leader and navigator.

### **Themes**

"Moana" explores themes of identity, leadership, and environmental stewardship. It emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s heritage, embracing one’s true self, and taking responsibility for the well-being of the world. The film is celebrated for its rich cultural representation, beautiful animation, and memorable music, including the popular song “How Far I’ll Go.”
